Mountain Elgon national park is located in the eastern part of Uganda on Mountain Elgon. A dormant volcano and one of the highest one in Africa with over 4,444 m. It was once the highest in Africa though but years of erosion due to its soil nature reduced it. And also is only 140 km off Lake Victoria. Mountain Elgon National park covers an area of 1,279 sqkms and bisected on the boarder of Kenya and Uganda. Uganda covers the biggest with over 1100 sqkm besting Kenya which has 61osqm with over 500 sqkm.

Mountain Elgon National park is Sanctuary to wildlife, over 300 bird species with the rare lammerger. The higher the slopes the more wild you meet, cheetah that that live in tree, many more like buffalos and other replies that like the connecting rivers like River ‘Manafwa’ that are of course tributaries of River Nile and also source from lake victoria.

The local people of Mountain Elgon are ‘the Sabinyi’ and ‘the Bamasaba’ who live near the mountain are very friendly and hospitable and are great trekkers and can come to and from the highest peaks as often as they wish in just one week. And some are English speaking so can make hostess and guides. It’s not a very big National park but you are bound to have the time of your life in the place.
