The Nkuringo Gorilla Sector, located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda, is renowned for its mountain gorilla families. 1. Nkuringo Gorilla Family
The Nkuringo family is the first and most iconic gorilla group in the Nkuringo sector. Named after the sector itself, it was originally led by the dominant silverback Nkuringo until his death in 2008. The group was later taken over by silverback Rafiki, renowned for his immense size and strength.
The Nkuringo family initially had 20 members, including three silverbacks, adult females, and their offspring. Despite territorial conflicts with the Bushaho family, which led to the departure of some members, this group remains dynamic and diverse. Visitors lucky enough to trek with the Nkuringo family are treated to an incredible experience, observing the gorillas as they move through the forest, forage for food, and interact with each other—a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
2. Bushaho Gorilla Family
Formed after the death of Nkuringo, the Bushaho family was discovered in 2012, led by Bahati, a former silverback of the Nkuringo group. The family has grown into a closely bonded unit, comprising several adult females and their young.

The Christmas family originated from a fission within the Nkuringo family and did not require habituation as its members were already accustomed to human presence. Known for its playful and energetic members, including several adult females and curious young gorillas, the Christmas group offers tourists a magical experience. Visitors trekking with this family will witness close-knit interactions between family members and impressive displays of strength and authority by silverback Christmas.
4. Posho Gorilla Family
The Posho family is the newest addition to the Nkuringo Gorilla Sector and is currently undergoing the habituation process. Led by the silverback Magana, the group consists of 14 members. While still in its early stages of habituation, the Posho family offers tourists the chance to participate in a unique gorilla habituation experience.
This immersive process allows visitors to observe the gradual adaptation of wild gorillas to human presence, contributing to their conservation and protection in Bwindi.
